Shane Clanton
Second-place finish in I-80 Nationals opener
Shane Clanton followed the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) to I-80 Speedway (Greenwood, Neb.) on Thursday afternoon to take part in the I-80 Nationals, the three-day weekend replacing the Knoxville Nationals due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In a stout field of 46 cars, Shane followed up the fifth fastest time in his qualifying group with a runner-up finish in his heat behind Josh Richards. Starting the $7,000-to-win A-Main in second, Clanton jumped up to an early race lead before polesitter Kyle Strickler snuck by on lap 11. Making a late-race charge on the final lap, Shane came up 0.450 seconds short to finish second behind Strickler with Josh Richards, Chris Madden, and Jimmy Owens completing the Top-5 finishers. The following night, Clanton shot out to a commanding lead early in his heat race until suffering a broken driveline that prevented him from competing in the remainder of the evening.
With preliminary results from Thursday and Friday setting the grid for Saturday night’s $30,000-to-win I-80 Nationals A-Main, Shane dropped 12 spots in the 80-lap finale to register a 17th place outing.
Shane sits in sixth in the latest LOLMDS point standings.
